This essay uses elements from Raymond Williams’ idea that “culture is ordinary,” which argues that culture is not only found in grand ceremonies or elite spaces, but also in everyday life and shared experiences. In my essay, I applied this idea to life as a student at The City College of New York, which revealed deeper cultural meanings. Examining how routine and experiences reflect larger societal values, traditions, and expectations. Through reflection and analysis, I unpacked how something so simple carries significant cultural weight, showing how personal experiences are shaped by historical, social, and political forces. Writing this essay strengthened my ability to connect theory with real life, while also developing my narrative and critical thinking skills.
